The CCHS Grand National Forensics competitors have done
us proud. Aaron Stone and Brett Laidacker competed in five long, demanding
preliminary rounds of Public Forum Debate on the resolution, Resolved: that
freedom of religion has evolved into freedom from religion. The gentlemen
were required to argue both sides of the resolution, in varying rounds.
Aaron and Brett won three rounds, and almost won a fourth, missing the win
by one point. These two young men have tackled topics from No Child Left
Behind, to whether or not to try terrorist prisoners in US courts. All
topics have required great research skills, persuasive and informative
writing and speaking, critical thinking and strong organization. Brett and
Aaron have mastered all of these and have been worthy competitors through
all four years of debate.
Marshall McCollum and Chris Criqui are amazing actors. Last year they
advanced to Nationals with a comedic cutting from a full length play, ALL
THE GREAT BOOKS. This year, the young men took on quite a challenge. They
worked together to cut sections from the classic book, THE LITTLE PRINCE,
which is the touching story of a little boy who falls out of the sky and the
characters he meets. Chris and Marshall were one of 209 Dramatic Duo teams
in Omaha. After five preliminary rounds, they advanced to octo finals, and
from octos, advanced to quarter finals, making them one of the top
forty-eight teams. All four of our fellows were against the best competitors
from forty-nine of the fifty US states. The model they have set for hard
work and honor is admirable. And, they had fun! Our entire student body and
school community should give these young men a pat on the back and a "Well
done!"
