Title I Reading
What is Title I?
Title I is the largest federally funded educational program. This program is funded by the Federal Government and overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Title I program provides additional support to help students who are below level, become proficient in reading.
What is the Goal of Title I?
The goal of Title I is to have students improve their reading skills. Students may start and stop receiving services at any time throughout the school year based on their benchmark scores.
Who is eligible?
Any student can be eligible to receive support during any portion of the school year as long as there is evidence of a need for additional instruction. Students who score Basic or Below Basic on multiple benchmark assessments would be considered eligible for Title I support.
Formal benchmarks assessments are conducted three times a year.
We service students in grades Kindergarten through Fourth in our building.
National, State, and District Testing
Students are screened and placed on a rank order list to make certain that Title I serves those students in greatest need. Students who qualify for Title I will begin receiving services and parents will be contacted. Students receive Title I services on a yearly basis and must be screened each year.
What does the reading instruction look like?
Title I teachers instruct students in small groups using a variety of teaching methods and materials. Title I teachers work closely with classroom teachers and staff members to determine how to best meet the needs of children.
Parent Involvement
A vital component of Title I is parental involvement. Parents can share in the planning process of the parent/child activities, trainings, and design of the Title I instructional program. Central Columbia Elementary also has an active Parent Advisory Council that encourages the involvement of all Title I parents. We appreciate parent input as it is very important to us. Parents and teachers working together is a win-win for student success.

Homework Policy:
Building/District; applies to Board Policy 5520
Homework is to be used as a reinforcement of what has already happened in the classroom. Homework is not new material that the child is unfamiliar with how to do.
As a general guideline, the maximum amount of time spent doing homework should be 10 minutes multiplied by the student's grade level. For example, a first grader could expect a maximum of 10 minutes of homework per night, while a fourth grader could expect to take 40 minutes to complete his or her homework.
