Hello, As you may be aware, Central Columbia School District has launched a campaign this school year to raise awareness to the dangers of bullying among our students. In conjunction with this messaging, we would like to invite you to an evening presentation on November 13th at 6:00 pm in the Central Columbia High School Auditorium to discuss the intersection of social media and mental health issues in teens. The suicide rate among middle and high-school-aged children has increased drastically since the introduction of the smartphone, and cyberbullying has been a significant contributor to this growing trend. As school administrators and parents, we know first-hand how overwhelming and dangerous the misuse of social media can be. Even if your child is currently in elementary school, it is never too early to learn strategies to help your child handle issues that may affect them down the road. Because of the increasing trends across the nation, we have invited guest speaker John Halligan to speak to a parent audience on November 13th. Mr. Halligan has developed a presentation about his son, whose heartbreaking story changed his life forever. Through his story, Mr. Halligan has inspired students to reach out before it’s too late. His program has received much praise for its effectiveness in helping parents better understand bullying, suicide prevention, and self-advocacy. He will tell his son’s story and discuss these critical topics. He will also advise parents and guardians on mitigating potential mental health risks. This presentation is intended for parents and guardians and is not designed for a student audience. There is no cost to attend the presentation, so we sincerely hope that you are able to join us on Wednesday, November 13th, at 6:00 pm in the high school auditorium for this very important topic that affects so many students nationwide. Sincerely, Adam Comstock, CCHS Principal Chad Heintzelman, CCMS Principal Emily Brockmann, CCES Principal

Central Columbia School District was recently designated as a Great Pennsylvania School. The Great Pennsylvania Schools (GPS) designation recognizes Pennsylvania public schools that provide students with access to rigorous programming, are community-centric, demonstrate financial well-being and display resilience. “We are extremely proud of the students and staff at Central Columbia. We are surrounded by a caring and engaged community. When you combine that with a dedicated and passionate group of professionals, that makes for a winning combination. One that is student centered and aligns with our mission, to strive for excellence in education,” Central Columbia Assistant Superintendent Thomas Sharrow. To receive this designation, districts must meet the criteria established in each of the four categories. Districts that provide students with academically rigorous programming must confirm that 100% of their teachers are certified and that students have access to career and technical education, gifted education, advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses, and JROTC programming. To demonstrate a district’s position as the centerpiece of the community, it must exemplify innovation in school programming, regularly celebrate the successes of students and staff, and provide academic and extracurricular offerings for the benefit of students. The final criteria – resilience and fiscal health – measure a district’s planning efforts that ultimately lead to successful academic programming. To meet the resilience criteria, a district must implement an emergency preparedness plan and provide mental health supports to students. A district meets the financially healthy criteria by having an elected or independent auditor conduct a financial audit annually, making the final district budget available for public review prior to adoption, and following School Code requirements for bids and quotations when purchasing goods and services. In addition to the GPS designation and success stories from schools across the state, the campaign website also houses information about the role and responsibilities of a school board, how to run for a position on a local school board, and a collective vision for the future of public education in Pennsylvania. Central Columbia School District is proud to be recognized as one of the Great Pennsylvania Schools!

Central Columbia School District holds your child's safety and our emergency preparedness as two extremely important priorities. We wish to inform you that throughout the course of every school year we conduct exercises to ensure our district maintains a high level of safety and preparedness. Each school conducts monthly fire drills, and at least one emergency drill that focuses on our response to a threat identified either within or outside our school buildings. Our emergency drills will be occurring in each of our schools within the next month. These drills will allow us to accurately gauge our level of preparedness should an actual incident ever occur. Central Columbia will inform you of each emergency drill that we are conducting immediately upon their initiation so you are aware a drill, and not an actual incident, is occurring on campus.
